Features of a great Small Forward

Small Forward

Small forwards are really valuable in any basketball team because they have an all-around ability in a variety of ways

Small Forward often refers to as a jack-of-all-trades, and for that reason, he’s often the best athlete on the floor. They are perimeter players who can play down low when necessary. Most interestingly, he’s a ball-handler who can get inside and attack the rim.

He must have a strong mid-range offensive game, and just in case you find the one that has the ability to knock down a shot from a three-point range, he’s indeed a huge plus. Even though these awesome players are tagged with the word “small”, yet they play big.

“It is not how big you are; it is how big you play. – John Wooden”

A quick first step is a small forward’s best friend. If he can quickly get to the basket or fill the lane on the fast break, he can be a huge asset to his team. Talking about shooting, whether it´s from 3-point range, driving to the basket or something in between, small forwards are capable of being versatile scorers.

Just like Power forward, the small forward must be physical enough to absorb contact when getting into the lane on dribble-penetration. The small forward must also be a good foul shooter because of the contact he usually draws from bigger players just as Power forward.

Defensive is the major reason a small forward must be physically strong because he must be able to guard both larger and smaller players. And one of the amazing, funny things about a small forward player is, on fast breaks, the small forward will have to switch to guard someone else’s man. So he has to be versatile enough to hold his own no matter whom he ends up guarding.

Seriously, they are close to a leader in a basketball game because of their responsibilities/roles in the game, for their team to win. Small forward is the aggressive and strong, all-purpose player on offense, tall enough to compete vigorously inside but quick enough to handle the ball and shoot well. Must be able to score both from the perimeter and from inside.
